The root cause of illness that natural healthcare providers seek in treatment is inextricably linked to a patient's larger social experience and may not be solely related to a physical ailment or dietary deficiency. Having access to healthcare and health is a basic human right. Various social, political, and economic factors marginalize various populations of people and create barriers to access health care.

StudentsAWARE uses the documentary series Unnatural Causes as a tool to bring understanding of these public health issues to NCNM students, faculty and staff. The Unnatural Causes video series highlights health disparities among marginalized populations as explained by Executive Director Larry Adelman:
“We produced UNNATURAL CAUSES to draw attention to the root causes of health and illness and to help reframe the debate about health in America. Economic and racial inequality are not abstract concepts but hospitalize and kill even more people than cigarettes. The wages and benefits we're paid, the neighborhoods we live in, the schools we attend, our access to resources and even our tax policies are health issues every bit as critical as diet, smoking and exercise.”

Foremost, we want to provide the NCNM community with educational opportunities to explore and develop critical thinking in regards to individualized health care and the role of the physician in breaking down the barriers that exist for people to access quality care. Our institution can become a leader among other natural healthcare medical schools by demonstrating our commitment to improving community health and access to care.

After the viewing, participants are invited to attend one of the several small group discussions led by professional facilitators trained in intercultural dialogue and conflict mediation.

In addition, during this event we will be introducing our StudentsAWARE Mural Project, an illustrative way to express diversity in our school.
